What Is Asbestos and Why Is It Dangerous?
Asbestos was commonly used in homes built before 1980, often found in:
- Popcorn ceilings
- Joint compound and wall textures
- Linoleum and vinyl flooring
- Duct insulation and more
When disturbed during water damage, renovations, or demolition, asbestos can release hazardous airborne fibers that may cause:
- Mesothelioma
- Asbestosis
- Lung cancer
Even though residential work isn’t regulated the same as commercial, hiring licensed professionals like Texguard for asbestos removal keeps your home safe, clean, and properly documented.
Water Damage? Call Us Before You Cut
After a water loss, many homeowners start tearing out drywall, but that can be a dangerous mistake. Homes built before 1980 often contain asbestos in joint compound and texture. Cutting without testing can contaminate your home with toxic fibers.
Call Texguard first we’ll guide you through the right steps and connect you with a licensed asbestos consultant before any demolition starts.
Our 5-Step Asbestos Abatement Process
Step 1: Inspection & Testing
We refer you to a licensed third-party asbestos consultant. Testing confirms whether asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are present. If damage is caused by a water loss, most insurance covers testing and asbestos removal (removal) if needed.
Step 2: Project Preparation
If asbestos is confirmed, we create a plan and document everything according to the consultant’s report and safety protocols.
Step 3: Containment Setup
We seal off the affected area using:
- Poly sheeting
- HEPA-filtered negative air machines
This keeps the rest of your home protected.
Step 4: Safe Removal
Our crew removes asbestos-containing materials using:
- Full PPE
- Decontamination steps
- Legal disposal methods
All work is completed according to health and safety standards, ensuring safe asbestos disposal.
Step 5: Final Cleaning & Optional Clearance Testing
We perform a thorough HEPA vacuum and wet-wipe cleaning. If needed, the consultant may return to conduct air clearance testing to ensure the area is safe.
